I know many of you are hearing news about what’s going on in our denomination and among many other congregations regarding our responses to issues of humans sexuality. I’m going to offer a few short sentences here, and a link to a longer letter from the Administrative Council of Richmond First United Methodist Church.

First, the United Methodist denomination has not changed its theological stance on homosexuality. It is possible that this might happen in the future, even as early as April of 2024, when the United Methodist General Conference convenes. For the time being, however, the denomination adheres to its traditional stance: we are not to ordain self avowed practicing homosexuals, nor to celebrate marriages between partners of the same gender.

We simply don’t know, to be clear, what decisions General Conference 2024 might make. In light of this uncertainty, our church leadership feels that considering drastic actions is premature. We no doubt have some very difficult conversations ahead of us, but these conversations can be much more fruitful once we understand exactly what options will be available to us.

Rest assured that when these conversations begin, we will make every effort to include everyone who wishes to have a voice.

In the meantime, we hope you take the time to read the attached letter from the Administrative Council, and please feel free to ask staff or members of the Ad Council any questions you may have.

Wise decision. What is confusing is the premature actions by numerous Methodist churches, which is contrary to what the Bishop requested as a course of action by the Kentucky Conference.
