October 21: A Shared Offering | Deuteronomy 14:22-27
This passage is one of those handed down through Moses to institute the Tithe among God’s people. We usually think of offerings on the Temple Altar as being consumed by fire. In fact, the offerings were meant to be enjoyed at the Temple together in fellowship “so that you may learn to revere the name of the Lord your God always.” Tithers are also reminded that their gifts are ways to “remember” the Levites, God’s priestly servants in their home towns whose means of support come only through these gifts. A portion of the Tithe (incidentally) was also to be forwarded to the Jerusalem Temple priesthood.
