July 15: 1 Kings 19:1-18, 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 | Silence
Why should I pray when it seems God is not responding? What should I do during those “dry” times in my spiritual journey when I don’t feel God’s presence? Sometimes “no answer” is a “no” answer. Paul suggests that God sometimes withholds what we ask for as a way of shaping us for the better. Other times “no answer” is an invitation for us to still ourselves and wait, matching God’s silence with our own. The spiritual fathers sometimes called this prolonged silence “the dark night of the soul.” Contrary to the bleak title, however, they considered it a gift that deepens faith and teach true Sabbath.
